Day 1: Rucca Comes Home

We’ve had what felt like a really great first day. We picked her up at 1:00 and she was very calm, very relaxed. Clearly very well medicated. The tech carried her out but said she was hopping around just fine. He put her in the car and she immediately sat up under her own power. She laid down next to me as soon as I told her to and we had an uneventful ride home.

As soon as we put her down inside, she shook herself off, wagged at us, and hopped off across the room to get a big drink of water from her regular bowl that we hadn’t yet elevated. Then she wanted a meal. We hand fed her about 1/2 a serving of her regular kibble and she took her meds with no problem in a bit of cream cheese.

She napped all afternoon, occasionally getting up and rearranging herself, moving from floor to bed and saying hi while in transit. We gave her the other half serving of her kibble at normal dinner time. Took her for her first walk just before bedtime and got a good pee. She started wagging like crazy when we  praised her and wanted her regular treats as soon as we got home. Normally she knows exactly how many she gets but didn’t seem capable of counting tonight. She’s had the next set of meds and is now sound asleep.

  1. This sounds wonderful and I am so happy for you.
I hope our dogs first day is like this. One more week and then it’s our turn.

I’m a nervous wreck but I am going to be ready.

It’s good to hear your story.

  2. Roger and Buckeye – I’m so sorry that you have to go through this too. I thought dogs (and cats) were amazing last week but my awe of them has grown exponentially in the past few days. They just are
themselves, no matter what happens. I’ll be keeping you in my heart. ❤️

Rucca is a champ, tackling life just as before, and your tone tells me that you have a good attitude of acceptance that will make this journey sooooo much easier, filled with tons of important life lessons and good times ahead. Keep it up!
